Estuarine Research Federation Biocomplexity in Responses of Estuarine Ecosystems to Climate Variability and Change

چکیده
The purpose of this working paper is to provide brief background on climatic variability and changes that may be anticipated over the 21 century which may affect estuarine ecosystems, with emphasis on the United States. Perspectives on climate change are distilled from a number of international, national and regional assessments of the consequences of climate variability and change that have been produced over the last two years. These reports are provided in the accompanying CD organized under the following:

Human activities and climate variability drive fast-paced change across the world's estuarine-coastal ecosystems.
Time series of environmental measurements are essential for detecting, measuring and understanding changes in the Earth system and its biological communities. Observational series have accumulated over the past 2-5 decades from measurements across the world's estuaries, bays, lagoons, inland seas and shelf waters influenced by runoff. We synthesize information contained in these time series to ...
متن کاملBenthic macrofaunal structure and secondary production in tropical estuaries on the Eastern Marine Ecoregion of Brazil
Tropical estuaries are highly productive and support diverse benthic assemblages within mangroves and tidal flats habitats. Determining differences and similarities of benthic assemblages within estuarine habitats and between regional ecosystems may provide scientific support for management of those ecosystems. Here we studied three tropical estuaries in the Eastern Marine Ecoregion of Brazil t...
متن کاملRole of estuarine natural flocculation process in removal of Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn
The flocculation of dissolved heavy metals is a process which has an important effect on decreasing the concentration of the colloidal elements during estuarine mixing of river water and sea or ocean water. During this important process, a large amount of colloidal elements change into particles in the form of flock and the dissolved loads decline. This study is performed to evaluate the mechani...
متن کاملClimate Change, Sea-Level Rise and Implications for Coastal and Estuarine Shoreline Management with Particular Reference to the Ecology of Intertidal Benthic Macrofauna in NW Europe
In many European estuaries, extensive areas of intertidal habitats consist of bare mudflats and sandflats that harbour a very high abundance and biomass of macrobenthic invertebrates. The high stocks of macrobenthos in turn provide important food sources for the higher trophic levels such as fish and shorebirds. Climate change and associated sea-level rise will have potential to cause changes i...
متن کاملOur evolving conceptual model of the coastal eutrophication problem
A primary focus of coastal science during the past 3 decades has been the question: How does anthropogenic nutrient enrichment cause change in the structure or function of nearshore coastal ecosystems? This theme of environmental science is recent, so our conceptual model of the coastal eutrophication problem continues to change rapidly. In this review, I suggest that the early (Phase I) concep...
